Chinese telecom carriers disclosed their 5G planning for this year at the end of April, indicating massive tests will be conducted across China.
China Mobile, which has the world's largest network and customer base, plans to test 5G network in five cities and build the first 5G base station meeting international standards in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou.
China Unicom will test its 5G coverage in 40 major Chinese cities, and China Telecom has already completed its regional 5G networks for test.
So far, the telecom carriers are busy working with companies like China Tower Corporation on installing 5G base stations.
"Now we are building 5G base station facilities in 41 cities of 23 provinces," said Huang Qingxia, General Manager of the Communication Development Department of China Tower Corporation.
Smartphone producers like Huawei said they have made their 5G phones and wait for licenses for commercial use.
"It took about 10 years for 3G to have 500 million global users and five to six years for 4G to do that. We estimate only two or three years are needed for 5G to reach 500 million users," said Yang Tao, vice president of the Telecom Carrier Business Department of Huawei China.
The 5G market is also profitable for device makers and some have made customer premise equipment (CPE) to transform 5G signal into Wi-Fi for home or industrial use.
"Mobile phone is just a small part of 5G terminals. The size of the market of intelligent terminals like CPE may be many times that of the smartphone market," said Chen Fengwei, a senior manager of China Unicom.
Despite great potential, it still takes time for full 5G application.
"How many base stations to build, where to build the stations and how to set the antenna angle of base stations — all of these will greatly impact user experience and need tons of experiments to deal with," said Huang Yuhong, vice president of the China Mobile Research Institute.
